June 19, 1566: Prince James of Scotland, Duke of Rothesay and Lord Great Steward of Scotland was born at Edinburgh Castle to Her Majesty Mary, Queen of Scots and her second husband Henry, Lord Darnley. By the next year Lord Darnley was murdered, Queen Mary was forced to abdicate, and the 13 month-old child became His Majesty King James VI of Scotland. In 1603 he also inherited the English throne from his cousin Elizabeth I and became King James I of England. King James I of England/VI of Scotland is the 10X great-grandfather of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
"Through both his parents, he was the great-grandson of Margaret Tudor, Queen of Scotland. Margaret was the eldest daughter of King Henry VII and Queen Elizabeth of York and the older sister of King Henry VIII.
Therefore James had a very strong claim to the English throne. It is worth remembering that his great-great-great-grandparents were Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville and Margaret Beaufort and Edmund Tudor.
...The current Monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Commonwealth Realms - Queen Elizabeth II - is a direct descendant of James. The line goes;
Mary, Queen of Scots = James VI of Scotland/I of England = Elizabeth of Bohemia = Sophia, Electress of Hanover = George I = George II = Frederick, Prince of Wales = George III = Prince Edward, Duke of Kent = Queen Victoria = Edward VII = George V = George VI = Elizabeth II."
