In the 1950’s Gordon’s Grandad EARNEST BISHOP (estimated 1886-1958) was the Safety Officer in a coal mine (East Cannock). They wanted the minors to start saving money from their weekly earnings and Earnest was the man who set up the savings scheme in the late 50’s
He received a letter inviting him to Buckingham Palace and went to meet the queen in person where he was awarded The British Empire Medal.
This story has always been shared in Gordon’s family and he heard about it many times from his late mother Evelyn Maud Bishop (estimated birth year 1902)
Photo is of Gordon (the grandson) who very kindly shared this story with me yesterday. Other photos are of the memorabilia from the mines which Gordon has kept.
*looking for newspaper articles to back up this story which I will share if I find any.
