Another Memory Of The Family

Paul served in the British Army in the 1980’s.

“ I served in 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards. When on ceremonial duty, I mainly guarded Windsor Castle and would be very close to most members of our Royal family on a daily basis.

I was honoured to serve our Queen. She was a special lady who, I will always remember, would very discreetly look you up and down as she passed to check you looked immaculate. I always did and sometimes got a smile!”

RIP Ma’am.

Mark Howard of Streetly, Birmingham served in the Royal Navy for 10 years. In 1986, he was serving on HMS Leander when it docked in Sydney, Australia as part of the Royal Australian Navy’s 75th celebrations. “I have a video of myself walking down one of the main streets in Sydney. Prince Charles was on my right and we were having a chat. Unfortunately, I had been ‘celebrating’ rather hard all day, so he probably remembers more of our conversation than I do!

“Later that night the fireworks on Sydney Bridge were incredible. The biggest display ever in the southern hemisphere at that time”.

Charles was, and remains a very caring man who was well ahead of his time, especially on environmental issues.

He will be a good King, as will his son William, when his time comes.

Conrad Jagger, served as a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy. In 1986, he paraded in The Trooping of the Colour, and spoke with Queen Elizabeth, who asked about his service and presented him with a letter from herself. He still has the letter.

Whilst serving at RNAS Portland (HMS Osprey), he worked on helicopters with Prince Andrew. “He was friendly enough and his parents would visit quite often to see him. The Queen must have thought the whole world smells of fresh paint. Every time she visited the paint brushes would come out and the base would be pristine! Prince Phillip was himself a navy man and was far less informal with us”. The Queen, was always lovely to us and I cannot thank her enough for her service to our nation.
